Best Beaches to Learn to Surf on the Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast is one of the best places in Australia to learn to surf. The beaches are sandy-bottomed, the waves are forgiving, and there’s a beginner-friendly break within a short drive almost anywhere you’re staying. As a surf coach based at Peregian Beach, these are the spots I recommend most for people taking their first waves.
Peregian Beach is my home break, and a genuine hidden gem. It has consistent, sandy-bottomed banks that serve up both lefts and rights, so you get plenty of gentle, rolling waves without the crowds you’ll find further north. It’s where I run all Send It Surf Academy lessons — it’s safe, uncrowded, and perfect for building confidence.
Coolum Beach, just south of Peregian, throws up a long, foamy wall that’s ideal for learners. There’s plenty of room to spread out, and the multiple beach-break peaks mean you can find a mellow corner no matter the conditions.
Noosa Main Beach is famous for a reason. It faces north, so it’s protected from bigger swells, and the waves are slow, long and easy to ride — a dream for beginners and longboarders. It does get busy, so early mornings are best.
Sunshine Beach is a little more exposed and versatile. It suits beginners on smaller days and gives you somewhere to progress as your skills grow.
Caloundra’s Happy Valley, down the southern end of the coast, is one of the most consistently gentle learn-to-surf spots around, with long rolling waves and calm conditions.
Wherever you start, the fastest way to progress safely is with a coach who knows the local conditions — how the banks shift, where the rips are, and which beach is working on the day. If you’re on the Sunshine Coast and want to learn, come join a lesson at Peregian Beach.
